US Uni Students Develop Device to Potentially Save Children’s Lives
Three university students in the US are hoping to save lives and reduce the number of children accidentally left in cars through the development of an alert system that uses weight and proximity sensors.
Developed by students at Louisiana State University, the system sends an alert via Bluetooth to a separate fob device, if a caregiver moves too far away from the child’s car seat.
The team developed the device after learning about families who have experienced the tragic outcome of a child left in a car – you can read more here.
Could Cycling Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia?
A new study has found that cycling as a form of physically active transport could potentially reduce the chance of developing dementia.
The study analysed medical data from the UK Biobank and found that those who rode a bike regularly as a form of transport had lower rates of dementia compared to those who walked, rode or used public transport.
The findings have been published in the journal JAMA Network Open but you can read more in this Medical Xpress article.
Fresh Hope for Rhinos in Uganda
Decades after poaching all but wiped out rhinoceros in Uganda, there’s fresh hope for the species as numbers continue to grow at a cattle ranch in the northwest of the country.
Captain Joseph Charles Roy was approached by the Rhino Fund Uganda charity to allow six rhinos on his land – considered perfect habitat – in 2005 and 2006 and since then the animals have flourished, with numbers now approaching 50.
While it’s positive news, the next step is finding new areas for the rhinos to continue to grow, which you can read on CNN World here.
Minions Appearing on Motorway Bridge
And this one was too cute to go past – mystery ‘minions’ are bringing a smile to residents faces in Lancashire, England, after being being painted underneath a motorway.
The pillars appear to be the perfect size and shape for the minion creations – painted by an unknown artist – and you can see the paintings yourself here.
