Could Paint Reduce Your Air-Con Use?

Scientists in Singapore have developed a new type of ‘passive cooling’ paint, that could potentially help keep homes cool, even in heat and humidity.

The paint combines three cooling strategies – radiative cooling, evaporative cooling and solar reflection – to hold water and slowly release it, essentially allowing a house to ‘sweat’.

Tests showed homes using the paint used 30-40% less electricity for air conditioning compared to other homes.

The research was published in a report in Science and you can read more here.

Australian Researchers Make Breakthrough in the Fight Against HIV

Researchers in Melbourne, Australia have discovered a new way to ‘force’ HIV cells out of hiding, in what could potentially be a huge step forward on the path to finding a cure.

One of the key challenges in fighting the virus has been its ability to conceal itself within certain white blood cells.

However, in a breakthrough based on mRNA technology, researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Immunity have found a way to make the virus visible.

Rare Penguin Chick Hatched at UK Zoo

A rare South American Humboldt penguin chick has been successfully hatched at Chester Zoo in the UK, after a pair of male penguins stepped in to help raise one of two eggs laid by another breeding pair.

Zoo authorities shared the eggs between nests to give the chicks the best chance of surviving, with Scampi and Flounder successfully hatching the chick – considered the most threatened of all 17 species of penguin.

The Zoo told the BBC it’s been a ‘bumper year for penguins’ – with 10 having been hatched at the zoo.
