A special greenhouse project has grown vegetables without any soil or light in sub-zero Antarctica.
The project’s called Eden ISS, and itschief systems engineer, Matthew Bamsey, said similar technologies could be applied into harsh environments and remote communities, to provide them with fresh produce.
Mr Bamsley said the technology was so advanced, fresh produce could can even be grown on Mars.
“We can spray the plants with the nutrients that they need to really grow effectively, without having to bring soil,” said Mr Bamsley.
“We don’t use natural light, we have LEDs, which can be tailored for every plant to optimize plant growth. We water the plants by a technology where the plant is fixed but the roots are sitting in air.”
The engineers hope the technology will allow people to sustain future colonies on Mars and complete longer space exploration.
